Theory

Ving Tsun was developed by ancient Kung Fu masters to train the body and mind efficiently and effectively for combat

Insights that define the art:

  • Centerline Efficiency: Simplicity, and economy of energy and movement is a foundational principle in Ving Tsun Kung Fu. This also applies to fighting and training; practical and effective self-defense skills can be developed in a short time. Ving Tsun centerline training makes it possible to block and hit at the same time, with power.

  • Relaxation: Training hard but relaxed builds a strong, powerful body, as well as the ability to be calm, alert and smart under pressure. This is beneficial when facing violent confrontation, or just the stress of daily life in the modern world.

  • Horse stances: Ving Tsun Kung Fu develops strong legs that will keep you on your feet, and put power into strikes, kicks and takedowns.

Practice

FORMS TRAINING:

Forms are a set of movements and techniques played in sequence that instill fundamental principles. The first form, Siu Nim Tao, is the foundation of the Ving Tsun (wing chun) system, and the vocabulary needed to understand and express the rest of the system. Forms training is the classic exercise of Ving Tsun Kung Fu, perfected by generations of masters since antiquity.

Learned in class and practiced individually, Ving Tsun forms develop the stance, posture, techniques, and power dynamics of the fighting art. Techniques and principles in the forms are also the source of Ving Tsun’s many Kung Fu conditioning drills.

PARTNERED DRILLS:

Ving Tsun is also known for Chi Sao (Sticking Hands), a system of partnered training. This is not sparring; it’s whole body-mind conditioning that develops practical self-defense skills.

Beginning with basic stationary exercises and building on the foundation from forms training, Chi Sao further develops centerline awareness, relaxation and the horse stances, as well as skill with distancing/bridging, timing, energy and sensitivity. At higher levels, Chi Sao includes pushing horse and a free-flow exchange of techniques.

In Chi Sao, students learn to practice techniques and counters on training partners in a way that develops whole body power and a high level of skill in simultaneous attack and defense, all while minimizing the risk of injury. The system is designed to be safe, as well as efficient and effective in developing Kung Fu.
